Facebook Business ResourcesStarting in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic took an enormous toll on small businesses across the world.

As a member of the team at Facebook that focused on delivering communications to small businesses, I kept thinking to myself: What can we do to help small businesses stay afloat right now?

This project is very special to me since it was my own personal idea that I had and gotten to champion and ultimately be the lead designer for.

ProblemBefore the pandemic set in, there was an overarching problem that consistently appeared in research for small businesses using Facebook tools.
  • “Facebook is like a black box, I have no idea how to use it”
  • Lack of tool awareness and discovery
  • Spammy guidance, “Too much noise when I’m trying to complete my tasks”

When COVID-19 started to cause lockdowns and small businesses were forced to close indefinitely, many teams at Facebook moved quickly to create tons of new features for them. All these new features were reaching out to our team to build into our communication channels with high urgency.

Because of this large influx of requests, my existing knowledge that guidance was broken for businesses on Facebook, and my desire to do whatever it took to help small businesses led me to arrive at the idea for Business Resources.

SolutionBusiness Resources at its core was a guidance hub for small businesses with a focus on COVID-19 relief.

There were three core components of the hub:
  1. Direct funding support
  2. Transaction related tools such as setting up delivery, paid online events, etc
  3. Communication options with customers

Impact
Business Resources was released and marketed in over 75 countries, seeing over 80 million visitors. The engagement rate hovered around 35-45% and we saw a positive impact on our topline metrics such as monthly engaged businesses.
